Center for Health Equity

Health sector in India is replete with inequities and they have become stark over a period of time. Though there are plenty of health care services available in the country at an aggregate level but in practice they do not reach to people who need them most like women, children, adolescents and people from marginalized sections of the society. The failure of top down government efforts and the work of international bodies has led to the emergence of people centered health initiatives. Center for Health Equity is one such initiative focusing on issues of inequities and related topics in health sector.

The Center intends on being attuned to the activities of the State and National Governments, yet to be continually representative of the people. The Center does not directly allocate resources, but instead mobilizes disadvantaged citizens to petition the government and demand what is rightfully theirs. The Center plans to generate awareness about the Government’s commitments and to facilitate their implementation. Focusing primarily on health equity and accessibility, the Centre will monitor issues such as access to primary health care, the Community AIDS Awareness Program, State level advocacy programs regarding coercive population programs, and State level programs to curb female foeticide.

Objectives:

The objectives of the Center are to:

•    Study health equity status and avoidable differences in health and other social, political and economic issues, which bear on health

•    Unite the NGO and civil society sectors throughout greater Rajasthan. The Centre hopes to build a strong network from which other organisations can further their own goals. It aims to do this by developing opportunities for dialogue regarding issues about which organisations are currently working. These opportunities will take form in meetings, rallies, and conferences.
